Thane Heins – Perpetual Motion, Free Energy or Simply Releasing a Brake?

Thane Heins

Update: One of my readers kindly provided a link with some very detailed technical information:  http://www.overunity.com/index.php/topic,4047.240.html

In my original post:
http://mwiner.wordpress.com/2008/02/08/perpetual-motion-claim-if-its-a-hoax-its-a-good-one/
I examine a device proposed by Thane Heins. He calls the device “Perepiteia” which deceptively echos of ‘perpetual’ when in fact it’s from the Greek meaning “a sudden reversal of fortune”. A kind poster on the original article pointed out that Heins appears to be applying power to the motor. Thus, this is NOT a claim of perpetual motion, nor can it be, given an external power source.

Just the same, the puzzle remains: Why does the device accelerate when the induction coil is shorted out? My personal question is: Does the device continually accelerate or only accelerate to a given point? If it continually accelerates we must examine the possibility that this configuration somehow has created free energy (highly unlikely with respect to current dogma). If it accelerates only to a given point, then the device is likely a new, more efficient, implementation of an induction motor (possible even in consideration of current dogma). The MIT professor who reviewed the set up refused to call it free energy or perpetual motion, but was willing to consider the set up a possibly more efficient induction motor.

I’ve dug a little deeper and dug out the actual patent application:
http://www.freeenergynews.com/Directory/Electromagnetic/Perpetual_Differences/CA2437745A1_Perepiteia_patent.pdf
The patent application makes mention of superconducting coils and wires, yet in his videos where he demonstrates the apparatus, I see no evidence of them.

Digging a little deeper, I came across this post:
http://peswiki.com/index.php/Talk:Directory:Perepiteia_Generator_by_Potential_Difference_Inc#No_Useful_Output which suggests that Heins’ design is more like a brake and the shorting out of the coil which produces the acceleration is really just a release of this brake. The relevant topic in dynamics is ‘Hysteresis’ and Heins’s setup, appears to use this phenomenon as some sort of a electromagnetic brake. Shorting out the brake would of course lead to acceleration. The above poster also points out that in the 7th video, Heins has a large fan cooling the motor which suggests that this very well may be a brake since braking would cause the current to be released as heat.

I always root for the underdog, and the story of a college dropout who developed free energy would have made me smile. However, in this case, it looks like we’ll have to wait to tell such a tale on a different occasion. Just the same, I wish Thane Heins the best of success and hope he continues his research and that significant findings result.

If the brake theory is true then heins is trying to con everyone because it follows that removing the coils completely would also remove the braking effect and accelerate the motor.

    If I’ve understood this post:

correctly, I don’t think that Heins is trying to con anyone, but instead is the victim of a very complicated phenomenon involving induction motors. The post author acknowledges that the effects are subtle and difficult to understand.

I don’t care about perpetual motion or PROOF or thermodynamic laws or any such baloney. IF there is a real effect then just hook up the machine to the power mains & collect a credit on your power bill. After a couple of months of income, you could build another machine and double your money. The effect is exponential. Within a couple few years you’d be replacing entire megawatt power plants with your own personal equipment. And the beauty is you’d never have to argue with anybody about anything! Just go plug it in & put the money in the bank. The FACT that this individual is flat busted & showing this thing off at MIT pretty much proves it’s worthless. Any normal honest person would hook it to an A/C generator & get it making some money. Personally, I would go to MIT and say “I danno you tell me, how come I’m so stinkin’ rich, is there anything to this perpetual motion jazz or whut?”

    Dear Mr. Heins.

I would like to tell you that, I am an inventor in addtion of a new one that produces energy using compressed air produced by hydraulic air compressor and perpetual buoyancy of water (See information on the attached web site).

1- Why don’t you try to put more load on the generator to see if the output energy can supply the demand without affecting the rotation speed while using your EMF as in your demonstrations.

This way you can close everybody’s mouth ones for all.

2- Why don’t you contact me at my phone number shown in the web site?

In Thane Heins experiment with two generator coils, he shows that shorting them out makes no diference to the drive motors speed. In their open-circuit state, he gives their voltages. He does not give any current value for them though, so it is impossible to ascertain what wattage these coils are producing. There appears to be a very small amount of magnetic coupling back to the shaft from his long block of iron laminations because this is just resting on the top of the curved bearing housing. With so little coupling, I tentatively suggest that very small wattage is induced into the two coils, thus shorting out these coils would represent “peanuts” of added back torque load to the motor.
So of course the motor won’t “feel” this load and stay at constant speed.

Thane Heins “Perepiteia generator” does not violate the laws of physics; it appears to be speed modifier for AC induction motors. The synchronous speed of an induction motor is determined by the AC frequency and the number of poles in the motor. The coil and magnets of his generator create a pulsing magnetic field that travels through the induction motor shaft and alters the magnetic relationship between the rotor and stator, causing the induction motor to speed up as if the frequency increased or the number of poles has changed. That is why there is no acceleration when coupled with a plastic shaft instead of a metal shaft. Do not confuse the fact that the motor speed increases when an electrical load is placed on the generator with “free energy”. The motor speed is not a true indication of power generated by the motor /generator set. Without actually measuring the actual horsepower and torque produced by his motor/gererator set, there is no other way to find out if it is producing more power than is put in by the electricity. Most likely, there is no magic here, but instead, a method of altering the characteristics of an induction motor. This could possibly allow improving the efficiency of induction motors, but not likely producing free energy.

Riadh Habash of the University of Ottawa, who says of it, “It accelerates, but when it comes to an explanation, there is no backing theory for it. That’s why we’re consulting MIT. But at this time we can’t support any claim.”. Heins has filed for a Canadian patent am i right? The invention could not be explained right away by MIT professor Markus Zahn, who refused to call it perpetual motion but said it might be a more efficient motor..

I really found your posts extremely interesting i hope you keep posting, and i shall keep following. Cheers!

  15. Covey Says:

I don’t know if any of you understand this but he is NOT trying to exceed the motors ability because he never goes past the motors full potential. What he is showing you is the ability to make more electricity out by placing the right amount of coils. It has nothing to do with torque and how fast he is making the motor turn it’s that he is requiring less voltage to maintain the high speed and his Generator is outputting voltage which in conjunction is showing he might be able to set the right amount of coils to output more then putting in. He showed this in his last demo before MAY 3rd and haven’t heard or seen from him in a month, very weird..

  16. Covey Says:

To many people who want to lead but never truly open their minds to be the best leader they can be. Once you know it all no on can learn anymore. So much bullshit negativity and lack of understanding here and I have no degree what so ever.
Why don’t you people who so already know how it works duplicate it and prove it wrong. They won’t it’s easier to sit outside and make guesses as to why you are so right.
    Blah Blah Blah!!!
